Richard Meyer will expand on his recent article in the November / December issue of ART PAPERS Magazine discussing the subtle and and not-so-subtle pressures that continue to afflict gay and lesbian artists in the aftermath of the culture wars over federal funding to the arts. Professor Meyer will focus on some recent instances in which the work of young artists was censored or attacked for its alleged "indecency".
Following the talk, Professor Meyer will sign copies of Outlaw Representation: Censorship and Homosexuality in Twentieth Century American Art, recently released in paperback by Beacon Press and for sale at the event.
Richard Meyer is associate professor of modern and contemporary art at the University of Southern California. His first book, Outlaw Representation: Censorship and Homosexuality in Twentieth Century American Art (Oxford University Press, 2002), examines the suppression of work by homosexual artists from the 1930s to the 1990s, and won the Smithsonian Museum's 2003 Charles C. Eldredge Prize for Distinguished Scholarship in American Art. His forthcoming book, Secret Histories of Art, discusses private, underground or otherwise restricted images produced in the United States and England during the mid-twentieth century.
