Curator and critic Lisa Kurzner will discuss topics such as Stephen Shore's place in the emergence of color photography in the fine art realm, the more recent importance of his work in Europe, and his experience with younger artists.

Stephen Shore is a self-taught artist and early pioneer in color photography. His career began at age fourteen when Edward Steichen, then Director of the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA NY), purchased three of his works for the museum's permanent collection. In 1971, at the age of twenty-four, Shore became the first photographer to have a one-person show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

In 1972, Shore began documenting the American landscape during a road trip from his home in Manhattan to Amarillo, Texas. This would lead to a series called Uncommon Places, which was published by Aperture in 1982, and became a pivotal text for young photographers.

Since 1982, Shore has been the Director of the Photography Department at Bard College, where he influences future generations of photographers not only through his work, but also through his teaching. One such photographer is Bill Boling, whose exhibition "Never Gone" is on view with Mary Stanley Studio from September 20 through November 4.

Demetrius Oliver is a Houston-based photographer who uses his body as a sculptural prop in combination with evocative materials (chocolate icing, coal, bags of garbage). His iconic Cibachrome prints refer to historical events, psychological states, and classic American literature.

Matt Bryans is a London-based artist who erases thousands of newspaper photographs, converting the world's news into large wall constructions full of suggestive figures and fluctuating atmospheres. His recent sculptures in wood and aluminum are made by labor-intensive acts of compressing, carving, and polishing.

Solo shows by each of these artists are on view at the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center from October 13 through December 9. There will be an opening reception on Friday, October 13 from 6-9 p.m.

Gregor Turk has been integrally involved with public art in Atlanta for over a decade in a variety of capacities: artist, administrator, educator, grass-roots advocate, panelist, and policy advisor. He is the former Public Art Coordinator for the Fulton County Arts Council, a founding board member of Metropolitan Public Art Coalition (MPAC), and a member of the City of Atlanta's Public Art Advisory Committee (PAAC).

Through these experiences Gregor has gained a unique perspective on public art in Atlanta, the stories behind the works, and the potential for future projects. His tour will explore these themes as it highlights the diversity of permanent and temporary works of public art throughout the city.

Cost is $30, and includes lunch. Space is limited to 40 people, and registration will be available through the ACP website.
