The exhibition runs November 9, 2007 through February 9, 2008

This exhibition of paintings, prints and photographs by Elana Gutmann, Carol Mangan and Burton Machen explore meditations on nature, voyages and the telling of tales.

Gutman
Elana Gutman, "Clearing" 52.5" x 24" Oil on Panel

Elana Gutmann's work is inspired and informed by the telling of tales and the storytellers themselves, and is presented in the spirit of enchantment and the rich variance of messages conceived, delivered and received. A first-generation American, Gutmann is the daughter of parents from Eastern and Western Europe. Her work considers oral tradition and multiple perspectives, one's sense of things and the transmission of culture through individual experience.

Gutmann's paintings are on wood panel, often in the form of a diptych or triptych or are works on rice paper or previously printed matter, such as the page of books. Thus, her works engage one of two extremes - either the solid, substantial nature of the wood or the ephemeral, floating nature of the papers.

Gutmann has had solo exhibitions at the Chateau de Brantes in Sorgues, France, Perimeter Gallery in Chicago, Perimeter Gallery in New York and Galerie Brockstedt in Berlin and has participated in group shows throughout the United States, Europe and Asia.

Mangan
Carol Mangan, "Forest" 96" x 60" Acrylic on Paper Mounted on Panel

Painter Carol Mangan's pieces depict dissolving colors that impart what David Roth has called a "suspended, diaphanous feel" and works that are "wholly non-representational." While her paintings may imitate nature, they are also malleable and can become various objects or environments according to the eyes of the viewer.

While Mangan's works deal with nature, they also pay homage to the natural ways gravity and light affect the painting process, abstracting the images, yet making them also more tangible. Mangan lives in New York, and in addition to painting also runs an art shipping company.

Machen
Burton Machen, "St Barth's 04" 55" x 40" Photography

Burton Machen has always focused on detail. As a child, he noticed subtle variations in texture and color and was always fascinated by the movement of clouds or trees in the wind. That fascination has now become an expression that he has chosen to share, finally revealing a side of his creativity that until about five years ago, he kept to himself - his photography. Machen's photographs of nature investigate the space between movement and stillness to capture the flow of nature that we often overlook. Before turning to photography, he spent 20 years honing his eye or detail in the fashion world. Originally from Ashville, Alabama, today Machen makes Los Angeles his home.
